Can you figure out which C2-level words match the following definitions? Write them down somewhere, then check your answers with the correct ones (which you’ll find in the video).
Attention: All levels are welcome! It’s a great exercise even if you’re still learning!
C2 Vocabulary – Challenge Your Italian!
1. Something that doesn’t last long, that exists only for a short time
Word: EFFIMERO – ephemeral
Example:
- La felicità legata ai beni materiali è spesso effimera.
- The happiness tied to material possessions is often ephemeral.
2. Something that costs a lot or requires many resources or energy
Word: DISPENDIOSO – expensive / resource-consuming
Example:
- Organizzare un matrimonio così lussuoso è stato davvero dispendioso, hanno speso una fortuna!
- Organizing such a luxurious wedding was really expensive – they spent a fortune!
3. A feeling of discomfort or embarrassment in a certain situation
Word: DISAGIO – discomfort
Example:
- Quando è entrato nella stanza, ha sentito subito un forte disagio a causa dello sguardo giudicante degli altri.
- When he entered the room, he immediately felt strong discomfort due to everyone’s judging looks.
4. A person who speaks little and prefers silence
Word: TACOTURNO – taciturn / quiet
Example:
- Luca è sempre stato taciturno, preferisce ascoltare piuttosto che parlare.
- Luca has always been taciturn, he prefers listening over speaking.
5. To show something with pride, often in an exaggerated way
Word: OSTENTARE – to flaunt
Example:
- Ama ostentare la sua ricchezza con vestiti firmati e macchine costose.
- He loves to flaunt his wealth with designer clothes and expensive cars.
6. Someone who is inclined or willing to do something
Word: PROPENSO – inclined / prone
Example:
- Luca ha veramente un cuore d’oro: è sempre stato propenso ad aiutare gli altri.
- Luca truly has a heart of gold: he’s always been inclined to help others.
7. A feeling of anger or hatred that lasts a long time, often caused by a wrong suffered
Word: RANCORE – grudge / resentment
Example:
- Nonostante siano passati anni, sente ancora rancore per quel tradimento del suo migliore amico.
- Even after many years, he still feels resentment for that betrayal by his best friend.
8. Someone who behaves in a natural and confident way, without embarrassment
Word: DISINVOLTO – confident / relaxed
Example:
- Anche davanti a un grande pubblico, il Presidente è sempre molto disinvolto e sicuro di sé.
- Even in front of a large audience, the President is always very confident and self-assured.
9. The attitude of someone who lacks shame and behaves boldly or disrespectfully
Word: SFACCIATAGGINE – shamelessness / boldness
Example:
- Ha avuto anche la sfacciataggine di chiedermi un favore dopo tutto quello che mi aveva fatto!
- He even had the shamelessness to ask me for a favor after everything he did!
10. To intentionally mislead someone and steer them away from the truth
Word: DEPISTARE – to mislead / to misdirect
Example:
- Il sospettato ha cercato di depistare la polizia fornendo false informazioni
- The suspect tried to mislead the police by giving false information.
11. Someone who avoids effort and doesn’t feel like doing anything
Word: INDOLENTE – lazy / indolent
Example:
- Ha un atteggiamento indolente e preferisce sempre rimandare tutto all’ultimo minuto.
- He has an indolent attitude and always prefers to postpone everything until the last minute.
12. The ability to foresee the future and make wise long-term decisions
Word: LUNGIMIRANZA – foresight
Example:
- Grazie alla sua lungimiranza, l’azienda ha investito in nuove tecnologie prima della concorrenza.
- Thanks to his foresight, the company invested in new technologies before the competition.
13. To attract someone’s sympathy or attention
Word: ACCATTIVARE – to captivate / to win over
Example:
- Con il suo discorso emozionante è riuscito ad accattivare il pubblico.
- With his emotional speech, he managed to captivate the audience.
14. Something very tiring, that completely drains your energy
Word: ESTENUANTE – exhausting
Example:
- Dopo una giornata di lavoro estenuante, non vedevo l’ora di dormire.
- After an exhausting workday, I couldn’t wait to sleep.
