How to Overcome a Learning Plateau

    1. How do you say that?!

You encounter the same word over and over again but just can’t seem to memorize it? Or, while having a conversation, a word is on the tip of your tongue, but you can’t recall it? It happens to the best of us!

    Here’s what to do:

    • Memorize new words in context: use sentences instead of plain word lists.
    • Use tools like Reverso Context or Dizy.com to find practical examples.
    • Choose useful phrases for your conversations and commit to memorizing them.
    • Look for new vocabulary in songs or Italian movies. For example, to learn the verb “fregarsene” (to not care), you can listen to the song “Me ne frego”, which literally means I don’t care.

    2. I have no one to practice with!

Speaking is the best way to learn a language.

    How to get started:

    • Find language partners through dedicated apps or websites.
    • Take part in language exchanges with Italian native speakers: dedicate part of the conversation to Italian and part to your native language.
    • In the beginning, if speaking makes you feel uneasy, start with chats and messages where you can write at your own pace.
    • Try role-playing games to simulate real-life situations.

    3. Always the same mistakes!

If you notice that you’re always repeating the same errors:

    • Write down your most frequent mistakes.
    • Review the rules and practice daily using sentences with the correct form.
    • Record yourself speaking and analyze your errors.

Pro tip: Repetition helps: Repetita iuvant! Rome wasn’t built in a day. It takes time, patience, and, above all, consistency!

    4. The 15-30 minutes a day rule

Are you running short on time? No problem!

Dedicating just 15-30 minutes a day to studying can make a big difference. Here are some ideas:

    • Combine studying with daily activities (e.g. cleaning or showering) by watching videos or listening to podcasts or audiobooks in Italian.
    • Pretend to chat in Italian (yes, by yourself!) while driving or taking a walk.

    5. Find your own method

There is no real one-size-fits-all method. Try to find what’s best for you!

    • Alternate writing, speaking, reading and listening.
    • Don’t sleep on the activities you enjoy the least. They might be what you’re looking for.
    • Try watching Italian videos with subtitules in another one of the languages that you’re learning to give yourself an extra boost.

Remember: Your method might not be perfect, but if you keep on trying, you will find what works best for you.

    6. Push yourself to use Italian

Even if you don’t live in Italy, you can create opportunities to use the language:

    • Set your phone to Italian.
    • Do Google searches in Italian.
    • Watch videos in Italian on YouTube or other platforms.
    • Practice speaking with virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa.
    • Describe what’s around you or think out loud in Italian.

    7. Set realistic goals

Define achievable goals and break them into smaller steps. Start small and gradually increase the difficulty.

    Example:

    • Beginner level: Learn 10 new words per week.
    • Intermediate level: Engage in a short conversation with a native speaker or with a virtual assistant.
    • Advanced level: Read a book or write an article in Italian.

    8. Use the appropriate learning material

Choose resources that match your level:

    • Opt for simplified textbooks or easy readings.
    • Avoid learning materials that are too difficult, as they might discourage you.

    9. I feel like I’m not improving!

    Track your progress:

    • Write down your achievements, even small ones.
    • Compare what you know now with what you knew a month ago. It will instantly make you feel better! Progress might sometimes be small, but it’s always there, if you’ve been consistent!
    • Keep a learning journal to monitor your improvements.

    10. I understand, but I can’t speak!

Can’t express yourself as fluently as you’d like? That’s normal!

    Tips:

    • Actively participate in conversations with native speakers, even if it’s challenging.
    • Ask questions and use a dictionary to clear up doubts.
    • Record yourself while speaking and analyze your weak points.

Remember: Understanding a language is already a huge step forward! The fact that you’re here means you haven’t given up. That’s already a huge achievement!

By following these tips, you can break through the plateau and improve your Italian. Stay motivated and keep practicing every day!
