ASKING FOR and GIVING DIRECTIONS in Italian: What to Do and Say?

You’re in Italy, in a new city, you don’t know how to reach your destination and your phone is dead. What to do?

The most instinctive and simplest solution is to ask a passerby for help. However, it’s not the easiest thing to do! Often, it’s hard to understand directions even for a native speaker.

But don’t panic! In this article, I’ll show you all the expressions to survive in this situation!

ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS

It’s always good to be polite, so it’s better to start the question with greeting and courtesy phrases like “Buongiorno” (Good morning), “Salve” (Hello), “Mi scusi” (Excuse me), “Scusi il disturbo” (Sorry to bother you)…

Here are some effective phrases:

Mi scusi signora/signore. Mi sono perso/a. Mi potrebbe aiutare, per favore? Dov’è… (l’albergo “Tre Nazioni”) ? [Excuse me, Ma’am/Sir. I’m lost. Could you help me, please? Where is… (the “Tre Nazioni” hotel)?]

Salve, mi saprebbe dire dove si trova… (via Vittorio Veneto) ? [Hello, could you tell me where… (Vittorio Veneto street) is?]

Scusi, come faccio a raggiungere… (la spiaggia/il supermercato) [da qui]? [Excuse me, how do I get to… (the beach/supermarket) [from here]?]

Per favore, mi sa dire come posso raggiungere… (la stazione ferroviaria)? [Please, could you tell me how to get to… (the train station)?]

Salve, scusi il disturbo: dove si trova… (la stazione della metro) più vicina? [Hello, sorry to bother you: where is the nearest… (subway station)?]

Buongiorno. Avrei bisogno di un’informazione. L’autobus… (13) si ferma… (davanti alla stazione dei treni)? [Good morning. I need some information. Does the bus… (13) stop… (in front of the train station)?]

Salve signora/signore, per caso, sa ogni quanti minuti passa… (la navetta per l’aeroporto)? [Hello Ma’am/Sir, by any chance, do you know how often the… (airport shuttle) runs?]

Scusi, a quale fermata devo scendere per raggiungere… (Piazza del Popolo)? [Excuse me, at which stop should I get off to reach… (Piazza del Popolo)?]

Salve, potrebbe aiutarmi? Dove posso trovare… (la farmacia) più vicina? [Hello, could you help me? Where can I find the nearest… (pharmacy)?]

GIVING DIRECTIONS

The most common expressions when giving directions are:

Vai / Continua / Prosegui dritto (Go / Continue / Keep going straight)

Vai / Continua / Prosegui di qua / di là (Go / Continue / Keep going this way / that way)

Gira a sinistra / a destra (Turn left / right)

Prendi la prima / seconda / terza… a destra / a sinistra (Take the first / second / third… on the right / left)

Prendi via… (Take… street)

Procedi / Continua / Cammina / Arriva fino a… , poi… (Proceed / Continue / Walk / Go up to…, then…)

È a (due) isolati da qui / un isolato più avanti (It’s (two) blocks from here / one block ahead)

Torna indietro e… (Go back and…)

Attraversa la strada / il ponte (Cross the street / bridge)

È troppo lontano per andare a piedi. Ti converrebbe andare… (in metro/in macchina) (It’s too far to walk. You should go… (by subway/by car))

Prendi l’autobus numero… / la metro… e scendi alla fermata… (X) / alla prima – seconda – terza… fermata (Take bus number… / the subway… and get off at… (X) stop / at the first – second – third… stop)

Sali / Scendi le scale (Go up / down the stairs)

Dietro l’angolo (Around the corner)

Dall’altro lato di… / Al lato opposto rispetto a… (On the other side of… / Opposite to…)

Supera… (Go past…)

Lo trovi alla fine della strada / sulla destra / sulla sinistra (You’ll find it at the end of the street / on the right / on the left)

When giving directions, it’s common to use easily identifiable landmarks, like squares, bridges, stations, etc., to indicate where a certain action needs to be taken.

In Italian, these references are given with the preposition “A”:

al semaforo… (at the traffic light…)

alla piazza… (at the square…)

alla fermata della metro/dell’autobus… (at the subway/bus stop…)

all’incrocio… (at the intersection…)

alla rotonda… (at the roundabout…)

al bar/ristorante… (at the bar/restaurant…)

all’angolo… (at the corner…)

al supermercato… (at the supermarket…)

al parcheggio… (at the parking lot…)

al parco… (at the park…)

alla chiesa… (at the church…)

It’s important to know the names of things you might find on the street. Here’s a list of useful vocabulary:

L’autostrada (The highway)

Il corso / Il viale (The boulevard / avenue)

Il vicolo (The alley)

La corsia (The lane)

Il ponte (The bridge)

La rotonda / La rotatoria (The roundabout)

Le strisce pedonali (The crosswalk)

La carreggiata (The roadway)

Il parcheggio (The parking lot)

La fermata (The stop)

I segnali stradali (The traffic signs)

Il vigile urbano (The traffic cop)

Il traffico / L’ora di punta (The traffic / rush hour)

L’area pedonale (The pedestrian area)

La tangenziale (The ring road)

La via (The street)

La piazza (The square)

La riga continua / La riga tratteggiata (The solid line / dashed line)

L’uscita (The exit)

Il marciapiede (The sidewalk)

La multa (The ticket)

Il semaforo (The traffic light)

L’angolo (The corner)

L’incrocio (The intersection)

Finally, it’s important to know essential adverbs and expressions of place:

vicino / lontano (near / far)

davanti a / dietro a (in front of / behind)

a fianco di / a lato di / accanto a (beside / next to)

 a destra / a sinistra di (to the right / to the left of)

dentro / fuori (inside / outside)

di fronte a (in front of)

tra / fra (between / among)

sopra / sotto (above / below)

lungo (along)

verso (towards)

oltre (beyond)

Here are some sentences combining all the various alternatives just seen. And then we’ll also see a dialogue!

• Continua dritto fino al semaforo, poi gira a sinistra senza attraversare la strada.

Keep going straight until the traffic light, then turn left without crossing the street.

• Svolta qui a sinistra e prosegui dritto fino al supermercato, poi gira a destra e attraversa il parco. Lo trovi all’uscita del parco sulla sinistra.

Turn left here and keep going straight until the supermarket, then turn right and cross the park. You’ll find it at the exit of the park on the left.

• Gira a destra e trovi la fermata dell’autobus, prendi il (numero) 5A e scendi alla seconda fermata.

Turn right and you’ll find the bus stop, take the (number) 5A and get off at the second stop.

• Attraversa il ponte e prendi la prima a sinistra. Alla rotonda prendi la prima a destra. Lo trovi accanto al supermercato.

Cross the bridge and take the first left. At the roundabout, take the first right. You’ll find it next to the supermarket.

• Continua dritto fino alla piazza, poi svolta a sinistra. Le Poste si trovano dietro la fontana. Però per raggiungere gli sportelli devi salire le scale.

Keep going straight until the square, then turn left. The post office is behind the fountain. But to reach the counters you need to go up the stairs.

• Prendi l’ascensore e scendi fino al piano -1, poi continua lungo il corridoio fino alla terza porta sulla destra. Si trova di fronte ai bagni.

Take the elevator and go down to floor -1, then continue along the corridor until the third door on the right. It’s in front of the restrooms.

WARNING!

If someone asks you for directions but you don’t know how to give them, you can say:

Mi dispiace, non sono del posto, non posso aiutarla. (I’m sorry, I’m not from here, I can’t help you.)

Mi scusi, non lo so. (I’m sorry, I don’t know.)

Non so dove sia, mi dispiace. (I don’t know where it is, I’m sorry.)

When you receive directions, even if you didn’t understand anything, thank and greet the person!

Here are some example dialogues.

A: “Buongiorno, mi scusi, posso chiederle un’informazione?”

B: “Certo, dica pure”

A: “Sto cercando il Museo Egizio, mi sa dire dov’è?”

B: “Se vuole camminare può prendere questa via a destra fino alla chiesa in fondo, poi giri a destra e prosegua fino al parco. Il Museo si trova proprio dall’altro lato, quindi deve attraversare tutto il parco. Altrimenti può prendere il tram, la fermata è dietro l’angolo, scenda alla seconda fermata, si chiama Museo.”

A: “Grazie mille, è stata molto gentile!”

C: “Salve, mi scusi, sto cercando Piazza Maggiore. Dove si trova?”

D: “Deve tornare indietro fino alla stazione della metropolitana, attraversare la strada e continuare dritto fino a che vedrà una fontana con un Nettuno. Una volta lì, svolti a sinistra e sarà in Piazza.

C: “Grazie mille. Invece sa dove si trova il Ristorante Da Michele?”

D: “No mi dispiace, non lo so proprio. Non l’ho mai sentito”

C: “Va bene, nessun problema. Non si preoccupi. La ringrazio comunque. Arrivederci.”

E: “Buonasera, scusi, come arrivo al Parco?”

F: “Mi dispiace, non sono del posto, non posso aiutarla.”

E: “Ho capito, grazie comunque, arrivederci.”

G: “Scusi il disturbo. Mi sono persa. Come faccio a raggiungere la biblioteca da qui?”

H: “Guardi è proprio a pochi isolati da qui. Prenda la prima a sinistra e prosegua dritto fino a quando non vedrà un’edicola. Superi l’edicola e attraversi la strada. La biblioteca è proprio lì, sulla sinistra, dall’altro lato dell’edicola.”

G: “La ringrazio davvero! Arrivederci!”

H: “Di nulla! Buona giornata!”

But it’s not over yet!

RECEIVING DIRECTIONS IN A CAR

Directions, if you’re in a car, might be a little different. First of all, you might hear references to distances in meters (because that’s the system used in Italy). Therefore, if your country uses a different measurement system, I recommend familiarizing yourself with meters.

Phrases for receiving directions in a car:

Segui le indicazioni per… (l’aeroporto). (Follow the signs for… (the airport).)

Prendi l’uscita per… (Verona). (Take the exit for… (Verona).)

La tua destinazione è a circa… (200km) da qui / a… (200km) di distanza / a… (15 minuti) in auto. (Your destination is about… (200km) from here /… (200km) away /… (15 minutes) by car.)

No, stai andando nella direzione sbagliata. (No, you’re going the wrong way.)

Fai un’inversione a U. (Make a U-turn.)

Alla rotonda, prendi la prima uscita. (At the roundabout, take the first exit.)

La direzione (non) è ben indicata dai cartelli. (The direction is (not) well indicated by the signs.)
