Today we will unmask some of the most common excuses not to learn a foreign language and we will find out how beautiful (and useful) it is!
Learning a NEW LANGUAGE
Why and how to overcome the SELF-IMPOSED obstacles!
1. I AM TOO OLD, I DON’T HAVE THE BRAIN NOR THE AGE FOR THIS KIND OF THINGS… I WILL BE DEAD UNTIL I LEARN
Yeah… here you are the most common excuse! Get rid of this losing attitude! There are thousands of examples of people who reached bis successes and goals in their old age. You’re never too old to start doing something! Especially if it’s something we like! You just need will, determination and a good learning strategy! Where there is a will, there is a way!
Furthermore, learning a foreign language is good because… IT HELPS YOU REMAIN HEALTHY AND IN SHAPE (at least at a cognitive level!) In fact, learning a new language means to learn terms by heart, to internalize rules, to combine sentences… A good exercise to keep our brain young and trained!
Many studies have observed that people who speak at least one foreign language are less subject to illnesses due to the old age, such as Alzheimer or senile dementia.
2. I HAVE NO TIME TO STUDY
This is a stupid thing! All of us have something to do during the whole day! But we want you to know that our day lasts for 24 hours (16, excluding 8 hours to sleep!).
What’s important is to be able to optimize your time and exploit every possible moment: you don’t need to study dozens of hours per day, you just need an hour every day! With the smartphones, you can learn basically everywhere, for example by reading something while you’re on the bus, or by listening to a podcast while you’re taking your dog for a walk, by doing the exercises while you’re waiting in line at the post office…
You will see the results in no time!
3. STUDYING IS EXPENSIVE… I CANNOT AFFORD IT
Nowadays, thanks to the Internet we have the chance to learn a language in a completely free way! There are a lot of qualified YouTubers who teach languages in an excellent way! The Internet is really an ocean of resources that let us bypass (do you know that in Italian we use lots of anglicisms?) the traditional, and sometimes very expensive, language schools (the language schools are wonderful and we don’t want to discredit them and their utility, but it is also true that not everybody can afford them!)
Among other things, speaking at least one foreign language can even HELP YOUR CAREER (and therefore, with the passing of time, enrich you).
All you need is only an Internet connection!
4. I DON’T EVEN UNDERSTAND MY LANGUAGE’S GRAMMAR, LET ALONE THAT OF ANOTHER LANGUAGE
Well, first of all, you don’t really need to know perfectly the grammar of a language to communicate (children communicate and make people understand them without knowing the grammar rules).
Furthermore, do you want to know the most funny thing??? The more you study a foreign language and its grammar, THE MORE YOU BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH THE GRAMMAR OF YOUR OWN LANGUAGE! That’s true! Proof is in the pudding! (advice from two people graduated in foreign languages)
Instead, if you want to learn Italian grammar rules, have a look at all our lessons!
5. I WILL NEVER USE IT: I WILL NEVER GO ABROAD
Nothing more dangerous… nobody knows what will happen in their future! Why should we avoid doing something just because we think something? Learning a new language doesn’t necessarily mean having an immediate and tangible advantage! It’s a process that opens our mind, helps us to know new cultures and to be less disapproving with those who are “”different”” from us.
If we hadn’t studied foreign languages, probably we wouldn’t be here now, because we learnt everything to start our YouTube channel and website by reading and listening to foreign languages!
Stop finding excuses! Learning new languages is good! Let us know in the comments why you are studying Italian or any other language!
